CHINESE NEW YEAR TRADITIONS

Chinese New Year Worksheet: Traditions

Chinese New Year, also known as Lunar New Year, is the most important holiday for the Chinese. It spans from the first day of the first month of the lunar calendar and ends on the 15th day; however, informal celebrations often start weeks before and end weeks after Vietnamese, Koreans, Taiwanese, and other populations with which the Chinese have had extensive interaction or where there are large Chinese populations also celebrate the new year. Visits to family and friends are common. Elders give small red envelopes containing "lucky money" to children. New clothing is worn to signify a new year. The color red is considered festive and lucky and is worn and displayed throughout the new year celebrations.

Answer the questions below based on what you have learned about Chinese New Year and how you think you would celebrate.

1) How important is Chinese New Year for the Chinese?

CHINESE NEW YEAR

Celebrate the Chinese New Year on February 8, 2016 with the Year of the Monkey.
The Chinese New Year usually starts in January or February of our calendar year. There are 12 different animals that are represented in the Chinese Zodiac. In Chinese astrology, the animal symbols are assigned to a year with the idea that if you are born within that year you will have characteristics of the animal represented.
